About

The EI.STEAM project arises from the need to promote STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics) education to contribute to the quality and innovation of teaching, in a formal context. Research on STEAM education has been carried out mainly in non-formal teaching contexts, such as workshops (Schnittka et al., 2012), or through programs developed in higher education institutions, in which the effects of these approaches on terms of motivation and interest in pursuing scientific careers (Beier et al., 2018). However, there is a lack of research focused on analyzing the continued effect of STEAM experiences on both student motivation for STEAM subjects and the extent of student learning (Rocard et al., 2007; Romine & Sadler, 2016). This project, of a qualitative nature, will be developed in public schools of the 1st and 2nd cycle of basic education, in the district of Porto. Participants will be 250 students between the ages of six and 12 and 10 teachers from the classes where the interventions will take place. Its main objectives are to conceptualize and develop STEAM activities for basic education, namely for the 1st and 2nd cycle, implement these activities in a formal context and evaluate their impacts on students' learning and their motivation in the STEAM areas. It is also intended to contribute to the training of teachers at these levels of education within the scope of STEAM education.
