About
Citizen education is a structuring axis of any educational system or any school practice. In Portugal, with the curricular changes initiated in 2017, this domain acquired its own curricular framework, with the creation of the ‘Citizenship and Development’ component, which was established as a mandatory component for all years of schooling.
The purpose of this research project is to characterize and understand the way in which Portuguese school organizations integrate citizenship training into their pedagogical-curricular options and organizational strategies.
We propose to carry out a case study, predominantly qualitative, of an exploratory nature, in a council in Portugal (for example, the 7 groups in Vila Nova de Famalicão). In the first phase, we will collect data from natural documents, in particular documents created by school groups related to curricular and organizational options – such as the Educational Project or those arising within the scope of Curricular Flexibility. In a second phase, we intend to access the perspective of the leaders (intermediate and top) of the school groups, through interview surveys. As a result of the analysis and discussion of the data, a set of suggestions will be developed that contribute to training practices, around citizenship education, sustained and conducive to the particularities and needs of contemporary realities.
